NRG Esports has been a pillar of North American Counter-Strike for years. The NRG CS2 roster represents one of NA’s best hopes on the international stage, combining veteran experience with hungry talent. Here’s everything you need to know about this iconic organization.

NRG’s Counter-Strike Journey

NRG is an American esports organization that initially competed in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive from January 2016 to September 2019, then re-entered the professional scene after four years in November 2023.

The team was founded by Sacramento Kings co-owners Mark Mastrov and Andy Miller in November 2015. In March 2016, NRG announced that Alex Rodriguez, Shaquille O’Neal and Jimmy Rollins were joining as investors.

The CS:GO Glory Days

NRG’s original CS:GO run produced some memorable results. In 2018, the American team finished first at the qualifiers for Intel Extreme Masters XIII – Sydney and StarSeries & i-League CS:GO Season 5. They also took second place at ESL Pro League Season 7 – North America and won Esports Championship Series Season 5 – North America.

Their biggest achievement was winning Intel Extreme Masters Season XIII Shanghai (IEM XIII Shanghai).

In 2019, the team managed to qualify for Berlin Major 2019, and in September the players took 3rd-4th place at the Major itself. That remains one of the best Major finishes by an NA team in recent memory.

The CS2 Return

On November 27, 2023, NRG announced a return to competitive Counter-Strike with the announcement of a new North American roster, featuring former Team Liquid players Damian “daps” Steele and Josh “oSee” Ohm, former Complexity player Justin “FaNg” Coakley and former Evil Geniuses players Jadan “HexT” Postma and Vincent “Brehze” Cayonte.

The roster has evolved significantly since then. In July 2024, NRG signed nitr0 as a replacement for Walco. In November 2024, they benched autimatic and acquired Jeorge from Nouns Esports. In January 2025, NRG parted ways with Brehze and signed br0 as his replacement.

Current NRG CS2 Roster

The current NRG roster consists of nitr0, Sonic, oSee, br0, and Jeorge.

The team’s current roster brings together a mix of experience and skill from different regions. nitr0, oSee, and Jeorge provide a strong American core, while Sonic adds international flair from South Africa, and br0 brings European experience from Denmark.

The in-game leader of NRG’s Counter-Strike team is nitr0 (Nicholas Cannella). His experience from years on Team Liquid makes him one of NA’s most respected IGLs.

Coaching Staff

NRG’s coaching staff includes daps and innersh1ne. Daps has been instrumental in the team’s development, bringing his IGL experience to the coaching role.

2025 Season Performance

NRG’s 2025 campaign has been a mix of regional dominance and international challenges.

2025 has been a year of mixed results for NRG’s CS2 team. In May, victory in Season 49 of ESL Challenger League cemented its place as one of the stronger sides in North America. The form was unable to be replicated on the international stage, with a top 16 placement at IEM Dallas and a top 27 finish at the BLAST.tv Austin Major.

Budapest Major 2025

NRG qualified for the StarLadder Budapest Major 2025, though they faced adversity before the tournament even began. nitr0 was unable to make the StarLadder Budapest Major and daps stepped in as a stand-in for the NRG CS2 roster.

Despite competing with coach Damian ‘daps’ Steele in place of Nicholas ‘nitr0’ Cannella, NRG found itself in a position to join M80 in the second stage after taking down Ninjas in Pyjamas and FaZe Clan in the first two rounds. The fellow North American side of M80 put a halt to NRG’s winning momentum in round three alongside Fnatic, which secured a close 2-1 win in round four.

NRG and M80’s day 1 wins in Budapest marked NA’s best start in history of CS Majors. The upset over FaZe was particularly memorable.

This set up a clash with Imperial Esports in round five. The lack of a full-strength squad was evident. Imperial’s superior defence made the difference on Nuke and Train, scoring 13-8 and 13-5 wins on the two maps to complete a 2-0 sweep.

NRG became one of the last teams to be eliminated from Stage 1 of the StarLadder Budapest Major 2025, ending the opening stage with a record of 2-3.

Team Statistics

The team has been active in CS2 since February 1, 2016, and has participated in approximately 777 matches, securing around 481 victories. NRG is currently ranked 59th out of 334 teams. They have a record win streak of 14 matches.

They’ve achieved 21 first-place finishes, 10 second-place finishes, and 16 third-place finishes in various tournaments.

NRG’s all-time viewership record is 769,902 Peak Viewers (StarLadder Major Berlin 2019). The team has earned $1,217,615 in prize money from CS2 tournaments.

What Makes NRG Special

NRG represents the resilience of North American Counter-Strike. While the region has struggled against European and CIS teams, NRG continues to compete and develop talent.

Key strengths:

  • Veteran leadership from nitr0 and the coaching staff
  • Strong AWPing with oSee holding angles
  • International mix bringing diverse playstyles
  • Organizational stability with NBA-level ownership

The team’s ability to upset top squads like FaZe at Majors shows their potential. When firing on all cylinders, NRG can compete with anyone.

Looking Ahead

NRG continues to be one of NA’s most consistent competitors. While Major glory remains elusive, the organization’s commitment to Counter-Strike gives fans hope.
